Japanese Translucent Clothes Scanner Trial at Narita Airport

Japan’s main international airport, Narita Airport which is close to Tokyo on Monday (5 / 7) started testing the scanner, or “scanner” for the entire body of each passenger as additional security measures, despite concerns about privacy issues.

Japan’s Transportation Ministry says it will test the five kind of scanner that can see through clothes and made by the United States (U.S.), Japan and several European companies and universities, starting from today until 10 September.

“We ask passengers to volunteer to do the scanning test. We hope to collect 100 samples for each machine,” said Director of Aviation Security Ministry of Transportation, Mitsugu Sato told AFP. “Fortunately, we received more volunteers than we expected,” he added.

Minister of Communications of Japan, Seiji Maehara said last week that he is considering to introduce a whole body scanner to improve aviation security and airport.

U.S. encourages further use of the scanner machine like that, which is said to have stopped a Nigerian who tried to overthrow the purpose aircraft to the U.S. on Christmas Day last year with explosive devices hidden in his underwear.

Several European countries have tested the technology, including French, English and Dutch. A number of airports in South Korea (ROK) also started doing a similar pilot program.

The machine will remain a controversy concerning the privacy concerns, because they show the anatomy of the whole body images of passengers.

In some testing in Japan, the ministry said image scanning results will not be stored or broadcast. These images will only be seen by the officers of the same sex with passengers, the ministry said.
