How To Find The Best Green Gadgets

Saving our planet is important, but that doesn’t mean you have to live in a tree and forgo your gadget pleasures. There are plenty of gadgets out there that will help you live a greener life and while most LCD televisions don’t come with a way to turn them off you can get devices to help combat that. Here are some of my favourite ones.
Cranking MP3 player
With a 1GB capacity and a design that won’t win any red dot awards, the main USP for this new MP3 player is its green credentials. One minute’s worth of cranking will give you playback of 10 minutes – although there is USB charging too for when your arm gets tired. Including shipping, it’ll cost 55 euros, which is around 43 pounds, but consider what you’ll save on batteries.
Husqvarna solar powered automatic lawnmower
It might set you back a cool 2000 pounds but working autonomously, the lawnmower will cut up to 2300 square metres of grass and can be programmed to come on at certain times or days of the week. Users can define the cutting area by laying a metal wire around the edge of their garden. The auto mower also has sensors in the device so it can avoid garden furniture. Solving the problem of collecting the grass, the motor’s three sharp blades cut the grass short enough as to scatter it back on the lawn.
The mower will cut for around 40 minutes, and then charge for 40 minutes in its charging station, however the solar panels on its back mean that on a sunny day the device will be able to stay out cutting for up to 50% longer.
Efergy meter
The Efergy meter is a compact monitor that allows the user to see electricity consumption in real time in your home. Made up of three components: a portable display monitor, a sensor which is clipped around the power cable feeding electricity into the premises, and a transmitter which is connected to the sensor and which sends the information to the monitor the data on the screen of the Efergy meter is refreshed every 5 seconds, so the impact on power usage of turning an electrical appliance on or off can be seen immediately. The Efergy meter costs 44.95 pounds.
The Standby Buster
You want to turn your television off at the main, but the sockets at the back and out of the reach of your arm. The Stanby buster basically gives you a remote for your plug. The easy to use, remote-controlled electrical socket lets you switch off multiple appliances completely rather than leaving them in standby mode – all from a single button press. Sockets are simply plugged into existing power outlets allowing any connected appliances to be switched on and off using the remote control. Standby Buster uses Radio Frequency (RF) rather than Infra-Red (IR) to switch appliances on and off, so it is not impaired by objects in its way.
Moixa USBCELL batteries
The USBCELL as an environmentally-friendly alternative to normal AA batteries. The top of one side flips up to reveal a USB connector, and the battery simply plugs into an open port. It takes five hours to charge one of the cells if it was fully discharged; each battery has a capacity of 1300mAH. The USBCELL cost around 12.99 pounds for two AA batteries.

Bathroom Gadgets

Electronics have become a huge part of our lives – even picture frames require a “plug-in” these days. High tech gadgets in our home once meant owning a flat screen TV or a home entertainment system, but now electronics are used to monitor home security, regulate lights, heat, or even water our lawn. They’ve worked their way through the entire house, and most recently, to the bathroom.

You don’t have to be a techie wiz to digitize your bathroom. Here is a sampling of some of the high tech gadgets available to you. Splash-Proof Screens:

What better way to relax in a tub then by watching your favorite TV show? Now Austin Lowery of California-based Jetson Systems has come up with a water-proof television cabinet with a fog-free glass frame that can be installed right in the shower or adjacent to the medicine cabinet. This, along with your handy waterproof remote will give you the ability to watch your favorite shows or DVD’s while you bathe.

The entire unit can be covered with a two-way mirror that allows you to see the TV screen, and when not in use, all you see is your reflection.Surround Sound:

What good is a television without the woofers and tweeters? Kohler has designed Sound Tile speakers that can be installed right in the shower walls with speaker technology from Polk Audio.

MTI Whirlpools has gone one step better. By installing transducers in the actual bathtub, it can be connected to your tuner or iPod, allowing you to absorb the sound while you soak in the tub.MP3 Shower Mirror:

This great little gadget transmits music from your iPod or MP3 player to its built-in water-proof speakers. With a transmitting range of 100 feet, your iPod can be sitting safely in another room. When not in use, the unit doubles as a fog-free mirror for the shower. The Fish n’ Flush Aquarium:

You’ll have no trouble finding Nemo in this double-lined aquarium toilet tank that can be attached to most toilets. The aquarium is encased within the outer tank, providing a clean environment for your fishies. It also comes with plastic plants, a fill valve, a flush valve, a flushing system, LED lighting, and a built-in door for feeding your fish. The fish, gravel and water are extra. The LavNav:

In keeping with the toilet theme, and probably designed by a woman, the LavNav is a motion light just for the toilet. It gives you the right amount of light, in just the right area and shuts off when you leave. Too bad it doesn’t put the seat down. Towel Warming Shelf:

We all know about radiant floor heating for the bathroom, but imagine a warming shelf to make sure your towels are nice and toasty when you get out of the shower.Super Showers:

Remember when we thought a shower head with a massage setting was revolutionary? Now with multiple shower heads, added foot baths, built in saunas and steam baths, stereos and TV’s the simple home shower has evolved into more of a home spa, filled with optional features to enhance your bath time.

Using a digital control pad, the BodySpa Shower from Kohler gives users the ability to adjust the direction and massage action of the shower heads.

The Temazkal from Bain Ultra provides sensory stimulation in your shower by allowing you to adjust the lighting according to your mood, or create a thermal effect with its sauna setting. You can even add essential oil to the diffusers to enjoy aromatherapy benefits.

You’ll feel like you’ve gone through a car wash with the Ambient Air Body Dry System from Jacuzzi. Using the Summer Rain setting, the unit sends warm air through numerous jets, drying you off completely without the use of a towel.

Older People Indicated As Being Savvy With Gadgets

Although it is easy to think of the latest gadgets being solely used by today’s young people, a significant number of older consumers are making use of technological advances.
In a study carried out by RIAS it was indicated that many Britons over the age of 50 are getting on the information superhighway. According to the financial services provider such consumers account for just under a third (30 per cent) of all internet users, the fastest-growing demographic across the country. The firm also indicated that about four-fifths (79 per cent) of older online users have visited video website YouTube, while 17 per cent have downloaded either music or a podcast from the internet.
Meanwhile, over 40 per cent of “silver surfers” own a laptop computer, with 92 per cent having made use of a broadband connection. Some 19 per cent were indicated as having a media centre PC. However, it is not just computing in which older Britons are shown to be technologically savvy as slightly more than a fifth have either an iPod or some other form of mp3 player.
For those looking for an effective way in which to finance purchasing a computer, personal music player or any other kind of expensive electrical appliance, taking out a personal loan might be advisable.
Overall, it was indicated that those over the age of 50 account for two-fifths of the country’s total consumer spending, while they hold 80 per cent of Britain’s personal wealth. However, despite such financial stature that such adults may hold, it was suggested that many consumers could be placing themselves at financial risk. RIAS claimed some people may be undervaluing how much hi-tech equipment actually costs as they – often mistakenly – think such items are less expensive than furniture or jewellery.
In not having an adequate personal possession insurance policy – or indeed lacking cover altogether – it may be possible that Brits have to dip into their own pockets in order to meet the cost of repairs or to replace lost or stolen items. This could have an impact upon their ability to manage other demands on their finances in areas such as loan repayments, credit cards and household bills.
Commenting on the figures, Janet Connor, managing director for RIAS, said: “The readiness to adopt new technology being demonstrated by the over-50s doesn’t surprise us. We know from feedback from our customers that items such as computers, laptops, mobile phones and iPods/mp3 players are no longer considered ‘gadgets’, or as the domain of the young, but as essential household items.”
“Householders need to reassess and, if necessary, update the value of their home contents to account for these new purchases and ensure all their possessions are adequately covered by their policies,” Ms Connor added.
For those consumers on the lookout for a high-performance PC, an iPhone or some other expensive technological gadget, obtaining a personal loan may be recommended. Getting a loan may also provide borrowers with enough disposable income with which to take out a comprehensive insurance policy.
Meanwhile, getting a loan may also be recommended for those consumers who are looking to for an effective way to finance their passion for football. In a study carried out by Virgin Money in March it was revealed that the typical supporter spent some 1,080 pounds in 2007 getting behind their team in areas such as tickets, merchandise, food, travel and programmes.

Top Kitchen Gadgets to Make Cooking Easier

Kitchen gadgets increasingly play a significant role in the preparation of a meal, especially after a hard days work. With today’s advancing technology, more and more kitchen gadgets are being introduced to the market so we have decided to put together a list of our favorites. No doubt there will be serious disagreement to which maybe the most useful and we know we will have missed many off the list.

GARLIC PRESS/GARLIC MACHINES Garlic Machines: Garlic adds real flavor to a meal and is constantly used in a whole variety of dishes. However, it is fiddly so anything to help peel, crush and slice is undoubtedly a bonus. You avoid the messy task of peeling and chopping the garlic but get the desired result, with garlic ready to be added to the ingredients. Key products are the Garlic press and we especially like the Chef’n Garlic Machine Garlic Crusher.

FOOD THERMOMETERS: Being struck down by food poisoning is one of the worst things that can happen to you and this is where food thermometers come into their own. They measure the inner temperature of the cooked food; mainly meat, telling you whether the dish is ready to serve or requires more cooking. We particularly like the Bengt Ek range of food thermometers for their stylish looks

MANDOLINE: When there are so many vegetables and fruits to cut and slice, why not get a machine to do so it not only saves you time but also makes you look like a professional. Mandolins will enable you to slice and cut vegetables This kitchen tool helps in cutting the thin slices of fruits and vegetables. This kitchen tool enables the user to prepare a beautiful salad and additions to sandwiches. The Zyliss Mandolin is world renowned

ALLIGATOR CHOPPER: Whilst not as flexible as a Mandolin, the Alligator chopper is such a simple way to chop onions, vegetables or fruit without having any dangers of cutting your fingers. All you have to do is put the fruit or vegetable on the bottom of the chopper and press down – perfect every time.

KNIFE SHARPENERS: For those who use knives on a regular basis the most annoying thing is when they start to lose their sharp edge and become blunt. There are a number of sharpening tools out there but we particularly like the Ozitech Sharpening System and the Diamond abrasive knife sharpeners from Chef’s Choice which are easy and safe to use.

SLOTTED SPOON: We are constantly using a whole range of Kitchen Utensils and they are all very useful, especially both the Spatula and Turner. However, it is the Slotted Spoon which is our favorite, as it is so easy to use for taking any ingredient out of a boiling saucepan, especially vegetables and eggs.

SALAD SPINNER: Ever since I was a child I have just loved salad spinners. Such a simple idea and such a great way of getting your salad nice and dry. Viners do a good selection of salad spinners.
